Gastric emptying and digestive issues?
I would like to ask the doctor about information I found online suggesting that eating starch and protein together can delay digestion time.
For example, if eating rice takes about 1 hour to digest and fish takes about 30-60 minutes, does that mean if I eat both in one meal, it won't be digested in about an hour? Or do these two types of food empty from the stomach at a similar rate, so there isn't much difference in digestion time when eaten together? Thank you, doctor.

Hello! The digestion of food and gastric emptying depend on individual digestive conditions, as well as the type and total amount of food consumed.
Generally speaking, liquid foods empty from the stomach faster than solid foods, simple sugars are emptied faster than complex carbohydrates, and foods high in fat tend to slow gastric emptying.
Additionally, your overall health can also affect gastrointestinal function.
I recommend discussing your specific gastrointestinal condition with a gastroenterologist to better understand your needs and address your concerns.
Thank you, and I wish you peace and good health.

Combining starches and proteins in a meal can indeed influence digestion time, but the effects can vary based on several factors, including the specific types of starches and proteins consumed, the overall composition of the meal, and individual digestive health.
When starches (like rice or bread) and proteins (like fish or meat) are consumed together, the digestion process can be affected due to the different ways these macronutrients are broken down in the body. Starches are primarily digested in the mouth and small intestine, where enzymes like amylase break them down into simpler sugars. Proteins, on the other hand, are primarily digested in the stomach, where they are broken down by gastric acid and enzymes like pepsin.
The theory that combining starches and proteins can delay digestion stems from the idea that the body may prioritize the digestion of one macronutrient over the other. Some proponents of food combining suggest that eating these two types of foods together can lead to fermentation in the stomach, potentially causing discomfort, bloating, or gas. However, scientific evidence supporting this theory is limited.
In practice, when you eat a meal that includes both starches and proteins, the body is capable of digesting both simultaneously. The stomach can mix food with gastric juices, and the digestive enzymes can work on both starches and proteins at the same time. While it may take longer for the entire meal to be digested compared to eating a single type of food, the difference in digestion time is not as significant as some might suggest.
For example, if you eat rice (a starch) and fish (a protein) together, the overall digestion time may be slightly longer than eating either food alone, but it is unlikely to be drastically different. The total digestion time for a mixed meal can range from 2 to 4 hours, depending on the complexity of the meal, the cooking methods used, and individual digestive health.
Moreover, the presence of fiber, fats, and other components in a meal can also influence digestion time. For instance, a meal high in fiber may slow down digestion, while fats can also prolong the feeling of fullness and slow gastric emptying.
In conclusion, while combining starches and proteins may influence digestion time, the effect is not as pronounced as some theories suggest. The body is well-equipped to handle mixed meals, and for most people, eating a balanced diet that includes a variety of macronutrients is beneficial for overall health. If you have specific digestive concerns or conditions, it may be helpful to consult with a healthcare provider or a registered dietitian for personalized advice.
