Concerns about growth height?

Hello, doctor.
I am currently a ninth-grade student, with a height of 164.1 cm and a weight of around 108 lbs.
I usually go to bed quite late, sometimes until 1 AM, with an average bedtime around midnight, and I exercise about once a week.
I would like to ask if fasting would affect my growth and whether it is suitable for me to take calcium supplements (like Caltrate).
Are there any other calcium supplement brands that might be more appropriate? Since my height has only increased by about 1-2 cm from eighth to ninth grade, and considering my weight is on the higher side, I am thinking about fasting and supplementing with calcium.
Should I go to the hospital to check if my growth plates have closed? Given my height of 164.1 cm, being overweight, sleeping late, and not exercising much, is there still a chance for me to grow taller quickly?

Hello: It is not recommended for adolescents in their developmental stage to use fasting for weight control.
Instead, a low-carbohydrate diet (reducing starch) and appropriate exercise are advised.
Calcium supplements are just nutritional supplements, and any brand of calcium can be used.
It is recommended to maintain a balanced diet, get adequate rest, and have a regular sleep schedule, waking up early and going to bed early.
Engage in physical activity at least three times a week (including two physical education classes and weekend activities).
There is no need to intentionally undergo X-rays just to confirm whether the growth plates have closed.

As a teenager, your concerns about height growth are quite common, especially during this crucial developmental phase. At 164.1 cm and weighing around 108 pounds, it's important to consider several factors that can influence your growth, including nutrition, sleep patterns, physical activity, and overall lifestyle choices.

Firstly, let's address your sleep habits. Sleep is vital for growth, particularly during adolescence when your body is undergoing significant changes. Growth hormone, which plays a crucial role in height increase, is primarily secreted during deep sleep. If you're going to bed around midnight or later, you may not be getting enough restorative sleep, which could hinder your growth potential. Aim for at least 8-10 hours of quality sleep each night to support your growth.

Regarding your question about fasting, it's essential to understand that while intermittent fasting can have health benefits for some, it may not be suitable for growing adolescents. Your body requires a consistent intake of nutrients to support growth and development. Skipping meals or fasting could lead to nutrient deficiencies, which can negatively impact your growth. Instead, focus on balanced meals that include a variety of food groups, ensuring you get enough calories, vitamins, and minerals.

Calcium is crucial for bone health and growth, and it’s great that you’re considering calcium supplements. However, it’s best to obtain nutrients from whole foods whenever possible. Dairy products, leafy greens, and fortified foods are excellent sources of calcium. If you choose to take a supplement like "Calcium Sucrose," ensure it’s from a reputable brand and consult with a healthcare professional for personalized advice. They can recommend the appropriate dosage based on your dietary needs.

In terms of physical activity, regular exercise is essential for promoting healthy growth. While you mentioned that you exercise about once a week, increasing your activity level can be beneficial. Engaging in weight-bearing exercises, such as jumping, running, or playing sports, can stimulate bone growth and strengthen your muscles. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise each week, incorporating activities that you enjoy.

You also mentioned concerns about being overweight. Maintaining a healthy weight is important not just for your height but for your overall health. If you feel that your weight is affecting your self-esteem or health, consider speaking with a nutritionist or healthcare provider. They can help you develop a balanced eating plan that supports your growth while also addressing weight management.

Lastly, regarding your growth plates, it’s advisable to consult with a healthcare professional if you have concerns about whether they have closed. A simple X-ray can determine the status of your growth plates, which will give you a clearer picture of your growth potential.

In summary, focus on improving your sleep habits, maintaining a balanced diet rich in calcium and other essential nutrients, increasing your physical activity, and consulting with healthcare professionals for personalized advice. While genetics play a significant role in determining height, a healthy lifestyle can help you reach your full growth potential. Remember, every individual grows at their own pace, and it's essential to prioritize your overall health and well-being above all.
