Issues of sexual orientation and misconceptions about self-awareness?
Hello, doctor.
I am someone who presents as male on the outside but feels confused as a female on the inside.
I have a general understanding that I am bisexual, but I often fantasize about being a girl.
I work hard to maintain my figure, avoid sunlight, and think about myself from a female perspective.
Although my clothing style is typically masculine, I actively seek advice from my female friends about skincare and makeup.
If the world were free from bullying or judgment, I would really like to try dressing as a girl.
However, I do not have the desire to undergo gender transition.
Since childhood, I have often thought, "If only I were a girl." After many years, I still struggle to understand myself, and I believe I should talk to a psychiatrist about my feelings.

Hello Hamster: Gender identity issues refer to the differences between biological sex and psychological gender.
For example, an individual may be biologically male but identify as female.
Some people may wish to change their physical characteristics through gender-affirming surgery.
Sexual orientation, on the other hand, pertains to the gender of the individuals one is attracted to, which can be of a different gender or the same gender.
Some individuals may be attracted to both, although the degree of attraction may vary.
May 17th is the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia, which emphasizes the importance of treating individuals from different gender communities with understanding and empathy.
Societal support and understanding can help reduce mental health issues within the LGBTQ community.
If you are experiencing gender dysphoria, it is advisable to seek assistance from gender-affirming professionals or organizations, which may help you gain a better understanding and acceptance of yourself.
Wishing you health and happiness.

Understanding gender identity and the challenges of self-perception is a complex and deeply personal journey that many individuals navigate. Your feelings of confusion and desire to explore your identity are valid and deserve attention and care. It’s important to recognize that gender identity is distinct from sexual orientation; while you identify as bisexual, your internal struggle with gender identity reflects a different aspect of your self-perception.
From what you’ve described, it seems you experience a disconnect between your external presentation and your internal sense of self. This is not uncommon among individuals who may identify as gender non-conforming or who experience gender dysphoria. Gender dysphoria is characterized by a significant discomfort or distress that may arise from a mismatch between one’s experienced or expressed gender and the gender assigned at birth. It’s crucial to understand that experiencing these feelings does not inherently mean you wish to transition or undergo medical procedures; many individuals find fulfillment in exploring their gender expression without pursuing a physical transition.
Your desire to present as female, your interest in learning about makeup and skincare, and your fantasies about being a girl indicate a strong inclination towards a feminine identity. This exploration is a natural part of understanding oneself. It’s also important to acknowledge the societal pressures and stigma that can complicate this journey. The fear of bullying or judgment can create significant barriers to self-expression, leading to feelings of isolation or confusion.
Seeking support from a mental health professional, particularly one who specializes in gender identity issues, can be incredibly beneficial. A therapist can provide a safe space for you to explore your feelings, help you understand your identity better, and guide you through the complexities of your emotions. They can also assist you in developing coping strategies to deal with any societal pressures you may face.
It’s also worth noting that the landscape of gender identity is evolving. Many people now recognize that gender exists on a spectrum, and there is no singular way to express one’s gender. You may find comfort in communities that embrace diverse gender identities, where you can connect with others who share similar experiences. Online forums, support groups, and local LGBTQ+ organizations can offer valuable resources and a sense of belonging.
In addition to professional support, consider engaging in self-exploration through creative outlets. Journaling, art, or even experimenting with clothing styles in a safe environment can help you express your identity and understand your feelings better. Remember, there is no rush to label yourself; the journey of self-discovery is ongoing and can take time.
Lastly, it’s essential to practice self-compassion. The feelings you’re experiencing are part of a broader human experience, and many individuals face similar challenges. Allow yourself the grace to explore your identity without judgment. Embrace the journey, and remember that seeking help is a sign of strength. You are not alone in this, and there are people and resources available to support you as you navigate your path toward self-acceptance and understanding.
