Pain in the right shoulder and arm?
I accidentally missed a step while going downstairs and ended up tumbling down, hitting my right shoulder and arm directly against the iron railing of the stairs.
At first, I was relieved that I didn't fracture anything, but soon after, my shoulder started swelling and hurting, and my arm also began to ache.
I've been applying ice and using anti-inflammatory ointment, but it's been two days and my shoulder still hurts a lot.
What should I do to resolve this? Thank you!

Hello, Miss: Thank you for your inquiry.
Here are my responses and suggestions: 1.
You may consider increasing the dosage of analgesics and anti-inflammatory medications.
2.
You can visit the rehabilitation department for physical therapy, which may include interferential current therapy, electrical stimulation at acupoints, or low-dose ultrasound, all of which can help alleviate pain.
Lastly, I wish you peace and happiness!

I'm sorry to hear about your fall and the pain you're experiencing in your right shoulder and arm. It sounds like you may have sustained a soft tissue injury, which is common in falls like yours. Here are some tips for managing your pain and promoting recovery:
1. Rest and Avoid Aggravating Activities: It's crucial to give your shoulder and arm time to heal. Avoid any activities that cause pain, especially lifting or reaching overhead. Resting the affected area can help reduce inflammation and prevent further injury.
2. Ice Therapy: Continue to apply ice to the injured area for 15-20 minutes every few hours, especially during the first 48 hours after the injury. This can help reduce swelling and numb the pain. Make sure to wrap the ice pack in a cloth to protect your skin.
3. Pain Management: Over-the-counter nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen or naproxen can help alleviate pain and reduce inflammation. Be sure to follow the recommended dosage on the package or consult with a healthcare provider if you're unsure.
4. Gentle Range of Motion Exercises: After a couple of days of rest, you can start gentle range of motion exercises to prevent stiffness. For example, try to slowly move your arm in a circular motion or raise it to shoulder height without forcing it. If any movement causes significant pain, stop immediately.
5. Physical Therapy: If your pain persists beyond a week or if you notice a significant loss of mobility, consider seeing a physical therapist. They can provide tailored exercises and treatments to help restore function and strength to your shoulder and arm.
6. Monitor Symptoms: Keep an eye on your symptoms. If you experience increased swelling, severe pain, or if you notice any deformities in your shoulder or arm, seek medical attention promptly. These could be signs of a more serious injury, such as a rotator cuff tear or a shoulder dislocation.
7. Gradual Return to Activities: Once your pain decreases and you regain some mobility, gradually return to your normal activities. Avoid jumping back into strenuous activities too quickly, as this can lead to re-injury.
8. Consider Imaging Studies: If your pain does not improve with conservative measures, it may be necessary to get imaging studies like an X-ray or MRI to rule out any underlying injuries, such as fractures or soft tissue damage.
9. Follow-Up with a Healthcare Provider: If your symptoms do not improve or worsen, it’s essential to follow up with a healthcare provider. They can assess your shoulder and arm and recommend further treatment options, which may include injections or surgery in more severe cases.
In summary, managing shoulder and arm pain after a fall involves a combination of rest, ice therapy, pain management, gentle exercises, and possibly physical therapy. Always listen to your body and consult with a healthcare professional if you have concerns about your recovery. Remember, healing takes time, and it's important to be patient with yourself as you recover.
