Ankle contusion from a car accident?
I had a car accident about two weeks ago, and after an examination at a major hospital, they said I had an ankle injury but that the bones were fine.
I then went to a traditional Chinese medicine clinic for acupuncture and medication, and after two weeks, the swelling has decreased significantly.
The acupuncturist suggested I try massage therapy, and after the massage, I can put more weight on my foot.
Is this a good sign, or should I consult an orthopedic specialist? It has been three weeks, and I am still not fully recovered.

Dr. Li Weiqiang reply Rehabilitation
Hello: No pain and no swelling indicate stability, but full weight-bearing is not possible yet, and further examination is needed to check for soft tissue damage.
If you wish to see a Western medicine specialist, an ultrasound examination and physical therapy can be performed.
Wishing you safety and health.
Sincerely, Dr.
Li Wei-Chiang, Director of the Rehabilitation Department, Taoyuan Hospital, Ministry of Health and Welfare.

Recovering from an ankle injury after a car accident can be a challenging process, and it's great to hear that you are actively seeking treatment options. The approach to recovery can vary significantly between Eastern and Western medicine, and both have their own merits.
In Western medicine, the focus is often on diagnosing the injury through imaging techniques such as X-rays or MRIs, and then providing treatment based on the findings. This may include rest, ice, compression, elevation (RICE), physical therapy, and possibly medication for pain management. If there are no fractures or severe injuries, the emphasis is typically on rehabilitation exercises to restore strength and mobility to the ankle. Physical therapists play a crucial role in this process, guiding patients through exercises that promote healing and prevent stiffness.
On the other hand, Eastern medicine, particularly Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), employs a holistic approach. Treatments such as acupuncture, herbal medicine, and tui na (Chinese therapeutic massage) are commonly used to promote healing. Acupuncture can help reduce pain and inflammation, while tui na may improve circulation and facilitate recovery. Your experience with acupuncture and tui na seems to be yielding positive results, as you mentioned a reduction in swelling and improved ability to bear weight on your ankle.
It's important to note that while both approaches can be beneficial, they can also complement each other. Many patients find that integrating both Western and Eastern treatments provides a more comprehensive recovery plan. For instance, you might continue with acupuncture and tui na while also engaging in physical therapy as recommended by a Western medical professional.
Given that you have been experiencing symptoms for three weeks without complete resolution, it may be wise to consult with a Western medical professional, such as an orthopedic specialist or a physical therapist, to ensure that there are no underlying issues that need to be addressed. They can perform a thorough evaluation and may recommend additional imaging if necessary. This step is particularly important if you experience persistent pain, swelling, or difficulty in mobility.
In summary, your current treatment with TCM appears to be beneficial, especially if you are noticing improvements. However, it is also advisable to seek a second opinion from a Western medical provider to ensure a comprehensive approach to your recovery. Combining the strengths of both medical systems can often lead to the best outcomes, allowing you to heal effectively and regain full function of your ankle. Remember to listen to your body and communicate any concerns with your healthcare providers, as they can tailor your recovery plan to your specific needs.
