Weight loss issues

Hello, doctor! I have been overweight since childhood, with a maximum weight of 125 kg.
From July to November last year, I lost about 15 kg, going from 117 kg to around 102 kg (through cycling and dieting while maintaining my basal metabolic rate, without using any medications).
However, I feel that my abdomen is still loose, so I am hesitant to rush into things.
Currently, my weight is about 98 kg, and my abdomen is still loose.
Recently, I want to start the second phase of my weight loss journey, aiming to lose another 20 kg.
However, I read online articles stating that individuals who have been overweight since childhood are destined to have "excess skin" after losing weight.
I'm unsure whether I should take it slow or start the second phase of weight loss.
Is it true that as we age, being overweight since childhood, or having stretch marks makes it more likely to develop excess skin? Are there any preventive measures?

Hello, weight loss should be gradual.
Currently, your plan looks good.
In addition to monitoring your weight, it is also recommended to pay attention to changes in body fat percentage.
Some individuals may experience skin issues as their body shape changes.
You might consider adjusting your exercise regimen; if the problem is severe, it is advisable to consult a dermatologist or a plastic surgeon.

Losing weight can be a challenging journey, especially when it comes to maintaining skin elasticity and preventing loose skin after significant weight loss. Your experience of losing weight from 125 kg to 98 kg is commendable, and it's understandable to have concerns about loose skin, particularly around the abdomen. Let's delve into the factors that contribute to loose skin after weight loss and explore some strategies to help you on your journey.

Understanding Loose Skin
Loose skin after weight loss is primarily due to the loss of fat that previously filled the skin. When you gain weight, your skin stretches to accommodate the increased volume. If weight loss occurs rapidly or if the skin has been stretched for a long time, it may not fully retract, leading to sagging skin. Several factors influence this phenomenon:
1. Age: As we age, our skin loses collagen and elastin, which are essential for maintaining skin elasticity. This means that older individuals may experience more loose skin after weight loss compared to younger individuals.

2. Duration of Obesity: The longer the skin has been stretched due to obesity, the more likely it is to lose its ability to bounce back after weight loss.

3. Genetics: Genetic factors can play a significant role in skin elasticity. Some people may naturally have more elastic skin than others.

4. Amount of Weight Lost: Significant weight loss (more than 20% of body weight) often results in more loose skin compared to smaller amounts of weight loss.

5. Hydration and Nutrition: Proper hydration and nutrition can affect skin health. A diet rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants can promote skin elasticity.

Strategies to Minimize Loose Skin
While it may not be possible to completely prevent loose skin after significant weight loss, there are several strategies you can adopt to minimize its appearance:
1. Gradual Weight Loss: Aim for a gradual weight loss of about 0.5 to 1 kg per week. This slower approach allows your skin more time to adjust to your new body size.

2. Strength Training: Incorporating strength training into your exercise routine can help build muscle mass, which can fill out loose skin and improve overall body composition. Focus on exercises that target the core, as this can help tone the abdominal area.

3. Stay Hydrated: Drinking plenty of water helps maintain skin elasticity. Aim for at least 8-10 glasses of water a day.

4. Balanced Diet: Ensure your diet is rich in proteins, healthy fats, and vitamins. Foods high in vitamin C (like citrus fruits), vitamin E (like nuts and seeds), and omega-3 fatty acids (like fish) can support skin health.

5. Moisturize: Regularly applying moisturizer can help improve the appearance of your skin. Look for products that contain hyaluronic acid, collagen, or elastin.

6. Consider Professional Treatments: If loose skin becomes a significant concern after reaching your goal weight, you might explore options such as laser therapy, radiofrequency treatments, or surgical options like a tummy tuck. Consult with a dermatologist or plastic surgeon to discuss the best options for your situation.

Moving Forward
As you consider starting your second phase of weight loss, it's essential to approach it with a balanced mindset. Focus on setting realistic goals and maintaining a healthy lifestyle rather than solely concentrating on the number on the scale. Remember that your health and well-being are the most important aspects of this journey.

In conclusion, while loose skin can be a concern after weight loss, understanding the factors involved and implementing strategies to support skin elasticity can help you achieve your goals more comfortably. Always consult with healthcare professionals, such as a nutritionist or a personal trainer, to create a tailored plan that suits your individual needs and circumstances. Good luck on your journey!
