Weight Loss Consultation

Hello, I would like to inquire about weight loss-related matters.
Currently, I am classified as obese and have sought help from traditional Chinese medicine, which informed me that I have hormonal imbalances.
I am currently taking herbal medicine to adjust my constitution, but my weight has remained stagnant.

Question 1: Where can I find weight loss clinics, or through what channels can I consult a nutritionist to create a personalized meal plan based on my body type?
Question 2: What avenues are available to test whether the herbal medicine I am taking contains any Western pharmaceutical ingredients (such as hormones)?
Thank you for your response.

Best regards,
Xiao Jun

Dr. Shi Guimei reply Nutrition

Hello! Currently, many large hospitals have weight management clinics.
If you are a resident of Taoyuan or nearby areas, you are welcome to visit our hospital (Taoyuan Hospital), where Dr.
Hsiao Tun-Jen has a weight loss clinic (his clinic hours are Tuesday evening, Thursday, and Friday afternoon).
You can also directly schedule an appointment at the nutrition clinic (available Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday both morning and afternoon, and Wednesday morning).
As for the testing institutions regarding whether traditional Chinese medicine contains Western pharmaceutical components, to my knowledge, you can contact the Consumer Foundation or the Toxicology Department at Taipei Veterans General Hospital.
Sincerely, Dietitian Shih Kuei-Mei, Director of the Nutrition Department, Taoyuan Hospital, Department of Health, Executive Yuan.

Hello, 小君,
Thank you for reaching out with your questions regarding weight loss and the use of herbal medicine. It's great that you are taking proactive steps to address your health concerns. Let’s break down your inquiries and provide you with some insights.

Question 1: Where to Find Weight Loss Clinics and Nutritionists
In many regions, especially in urban areas, hospitals and clinics often have dedicated weight loss programs or obesity clinics. These clinics typically have a team of healthcare professionals, including doctors, nutritionists, and sometimes psychologists, who work together to create a comprehensive weight loss plan tailored to individual needs.
For example, if you are in the Taoyuan area, you can visit Taoyuan Hospital, which has a weight loss clinic run by Dr. Hsiao Dun-Jen. They offer consultations on specific dietary plans that can be customized based on your body type and health conditions. Additionally, you can also seek out registered dietitians or nutritionists who can provide personalized meal plans. They can assess your dietary habits, lifestyle, and any underlying health issues, such as your hormonal imbalance, to create a suitable plan for you.

You can typically find these services through local hospitals, community health centers, or private clinics. It is advisable to call ahead and inquire about their services, availability, and whether they accept referrals from other healthcare providers.

Question 2: Testing Herbal Medicine for Western Drug Components
Regarding your second question about testing the herbal medicine you are taking, it is crucial to ensure that the products you consume are safe and free from harmful substances. In Taiwan, you can contact the Taiwan Consumer Foundation or the Toxicology Department at Taipei Veterans General Hospital for assistance. They may offer testing services to check for the presence of Western medications or hormones in herbal products.

Additionally, it is essential to consult with your healthcare provider about the herbal medicines you are taking. They can guide you on the safety and efficacy of these products, especially in relation to your hormonal imbalance and weight loss goals.

Additional Insights on Weight Loss and Herbal Medicine
While herbal medicine can be beneficial for some individuals, it is essential to approach weight loss holistically. Here are some general recommendations:
1. Balanced Diet: Focus on a diet rich in whole foods, including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats. This will help ensure you are getting the necessary nutrients while managing your caloric intake.

2. Regular Exercise: Incorporate physical activity into your routine. Aim for a mix of cardiovascular exercises (like walking, jogging, or cycling) and strength training to help build muscle and boost metabolism.

3. Monitor Portion Sizes: Be mindful of portion sizes to avoid overeating. Using smaller plates and serving sizes can help control your intake.

4. Stay Hydrated: Drinking plenty of water can help with weight management and overall health. Sometimes, our bodies confuse thirst with hunger.

5. Consult Professionals: Regularly check in with healthcare professionals, including your doctor and a registered dietitian, to monitor your progress and make necessary adjustments to your plan.

6. Mental Health: Addressing emotional eating and stress management is crucial. Consider speaking with a mental health professional if you find that emotional factors are impacting your eating habits.

In conclusion, seeking professional guidance is vital in your weight loss journey, especially given your hormonal imbalance and the use of herbal medicine. By working with healthcare providers, you can develop a safe and effective weight loss plan tailored to your needs. Remember, it’s essential to be patient with yourself as you work towards your goals.
Best wishes on your journey to better health!
