Height increase

How much does a single injection of growth hormone cost, and where is the best place to get it? I am already 19 years old; will I still be able to grow taller if I take it?

A Bu, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2004/01/10

Dr. Shi Guozheng reply Orthopedics

I'm not very clear about the price, but since I am already nineteen years old, it is theoretically impossible for me to grow taller.
The growth plates in human bones typically close after the age of sixteen or seventeen.
Once the growth plates are closed, there will be no increase in length.
If growth hormone is administered afterward, it can only increase the thickness and width of the bones.
Therefore, it is inappropriate to administer growth hormone after reaching adulthood.

More Info

At 19 years old, the likelihood of significantly increasing your height through growth hormone (GH) injections is quite low. By this age, most individuals have reached or are very close to their maximum height, as the growth plates in the bones typically close after puberty. For males, this closure usually occurs between the ages of 16 and 18, while for females, it can happen a bit earlier, around 14 to 16 years of age. Once the growth plates are closed, no further height increase is possible, regardless of hormone treatments.

Growth hormone therapy is primarily effective in children and adolescents who have not yet reached their growth potential due to various medical conditions, such as growth hormone deficiency or certain genetic disorders. In adults, including those who are 19 years old, the use of growth hormone is generally not indicated for height increase, as the physiological mechanisms that promote growth have already ceased.

Regarding the cost of growth hormone injections, this can vary widely depending on the specific medication, dosage, and healthcare provider. In the United States, the cost of growth hormone therapy can range from several hundred to several thousand dollars per month. It is essential to consult with a healthcare provider to discuss the potential benefits, risks, and costs associated with this treatment.

If you are considering growth hormone therapy, it is crucial to consult with an endocrinologist or a healthcare professional specializing in growth disorders. They can perform necessary evaluations, including assessing your bone age through X-rays, to determine if you are still in a growth phase and if GH therapy is appropriate for you. They will also discuss the potential side effects, which can include joint pain, insulin resistance, and increased risk of certain conditions if used inappropriately.

In summary, at 19 years old, the chances of increasing your height through growth hormone injections are minimal, especially if your growth plates have already closed. It is advisable to seek professional medical advice to explore your options and understand the implications of any treatment you may consider.
