Administering growth hormone
Hello, I am 20 years old and I want to increase my height.
I've heard that growth hormone injections can help, but is it true that once the growth plates have fused, it won't be effective even if I take it? If the growth plates have not fused, could you please tell me how much it costs and which specialty I should consult? I know that health insurance does not cover this.
Also, how many injections would be needed? Thank you.

The question of whether growth hormone (GH) injections can help increase height after the age of 20 is a complex one, primarily because it hinges on the status of the growth plates in the bones. Growth plates, or epiphyseal plates, are areas of developing cartilage tissue near the ends of long bones. They are responsible for the lengthening of bones during childhood and adolescence. Once these growth plates close, which typically occurs in late adolescence to early adulthood, further height increase is unlikely, regardless of any interventions, including growth hormone therapy.
In most individuals, growth plates close around the ages of 18 to 25, with females generally experiencing closure earlier than males. If your growth plates have already fused, then no amount of growth hormone will lead to an increase in height. This is because growth hormone primarily stimulates the growth of cartilage and bone in the growth plates. Once they are closed, the potential for further growth is essentially eliminated.
For those who are still in their growth phase, GH therapy can be effective, particularly in cases where there is a deficiency in growth hormone production. However, for individuals who are already 20 years old and suspect that their growth plates may be closed, the likelihood of GH injections resulting in increased height is very low.
If you are considering growth hormone therapy, it is crucial to consult with a healthcare professional, preferably an endocrinologist or an orthopedic specialist. They can perform an assessment, including X-rays, to determine the status of your growth plates. This evaluation is essential because it will inform you whether GH therapy is a viable option for you.
Regarding the costs associated with GH therapy, it can be quite expensive, as it is often not covered by insurance unless there is a documented medical need, such as a growth hormone deficiency. The price can vary widely depending on the dosage and the duration of treatment, but it is not uncommon for it to range from several hundred to several thousand dollars per month.
In terms of administration, GH is typically given via injection, and the frequency of these injections can vary based on the treatment plan prescribed by your doctor. It is important to follow the medical advice provided to ensure safety and efficacy.
In conclusion, if you are 20 years old and are concerned about your height, the first step is to consult a healthcare provider who can assess your growth plates. If they are still open, there may be options available to you, but if they are closed, it is unlikely that growth hormone injections will have any effect on your height. Additionally, focusing on a balanced diet, regular exercise, and adequate sleep can contribute positively to your overall health, even if they do not directly impact height at this stage.
