Shoulder pain?
I recently woke up in the morning with significant shoulder pain.
Additionally, I have previously used so-called health pillows on the market, such as memory foam pillows, but they made it difficult for me to fall asleep, and I also woke up with shoulder pain.
Why is this happening? How can I improve this situation? Thanks!

Dear Ms.
Ring,
I apologize for the delay in my response due to issues with the transmission of your message.
There are many potential causes for neck pain, especially if it occurs upon waking in the morning.
The most common reason is related to sleeping posture, followed by the posture maintained during daily activities (given that you are a young woman, it is less likely to be due to bone spurs, etc.).
Sleeping posture is associated with the pillow and mattress used; however, there is currently limited medical research on pillows.
Recently, I reviewed four articles related to pillows, and none reached a specific conclusion.
One article did support the use of roll pillows but also noted that they may cause difficulties in falling asleep for some individuals.
It is advisable to choose a pillow that provides adequate support for the neck.
Additionally, the so-called "health pillows" available in Taiwan have not been certified by medical institutions and are often merely marketing strategies by manufacturers.
While they may be worth trying, I would advise against placing too much trust in their advertised benefits.
Your inquiry did not specify which shoulder is more painful.
Generally, if you are experiencing pain on one side, it is recommended to avoid sleeping on that side (sleeping on the opposite side) or lying flat on your back.
Furthermore, try not to position your arm above shoulder level (especially avoid placing it under your head), as this may help alleviate discomfort.
If you continue to experience pain regardless of your sleeping position, it may be worth evaluating your work posture for excessive tension or strain.
It is generally recommended to change positions or stretch every 20 minutes to improve this situation.
Feel free to reach out with any further questions.
Best regards,
Guanzhao Xiang

More Info
Morning shoulder pain can be a frustrating and uncomfortable experience, and it often stems from a variety of factors related to sleep posture, pillow choice, and overall physical health. Understanding these causes can help in finding effective solutions.
Causes of Morning Shoulder Pain
1. Sleep Position: One of the most common reasons for waking up with shoulder pain is the position in which you sleep. If you sleep on your side, the shoulder that bears your weight can become compressed, leading to pain and discomfort. Additionally, sleeping on your stomach can strain the neck and shoulders, causing misalignment and pain upon waking.
2. Pillow Choice: The type of pillow you use plays a significant role in shoulder and neck health. A pillow that is too high or too firm can cause your neck to bend unnaturally, leading to muscle strain. Conversely, a pillow that is too flat may not provide adequate support, resulting in poor alignment of the spine and shoulders.
3. Mattress Quality: The mattress you sleep on can also contribute to shoulder pain. A mattress that is too firm may not allow for proper contouring of the body, while one that is too soft may not provide enough support, leading to misalignment.
4. Muscle Tension and Stress: Chronic stress and muscle tension can lead to tightness in the shoulders and neck. If you have a sedentary job that requires long hours of computer use, this can exacerbate muscle tightness, leading to pain that is particularly noticeable in the morning.
5. Underlying Medical Conditions: Conditions such as rotator cuff injuries, arthritis, or frozen shoulder can also manifest as morning pain. If the pain persists or worsens, it may be worth consulting a healthcare professional to rule out any underlying issues.
Solutions for Morning Shoulder Pain
1. Evaluate Your Sleep Position: If you tend to sleep on your side, consider switching to your back or using a body pillow to support your shoulder. If you must sleep on your side, try to keep your shoulders aligned with your hips and avoid curling your body into a tight position.
2. Choose the Right Pillow: Look for a pillow that supports the natural curve of your neck. Memory foam or adjustable pillows can be beneficial as they conform to your head and neck, providing adequate support. Ensure that your pillow keeps your head aligned with your spine.
3. Assess Your Mattress: If your mattress is old or not providing the support you need, consider investing in a new one. A medium-firm mattress is often recommended for optimal spinal alignment.
4. Incorporate Stretching and Strengthening Exercises: Regular stretching and strengthening exercises for the shoulders and neck can help alleviate tension and improve flexibility. Simple stretches, such as neck rolls and shoulder shrugs, can be beneficial. Additionally, consider incorporating yoga or Pilates into your routine to promote overall body awareness and flexibility.
5. Manage Stress: Techniques such as mindfulness, meditation, or deep-breathing exercises can help reduce overall stress and muscle tension. Regular physical activity can also improve your mood and reduce stress levels.
6. Consult a Professional: If your shoulder pain persists despite making these changes, it may be wise to consult a healthcare professional. A physical therapist can provide tailored exercises and treatments to address your specific issues.
In conclusion, morning shoulder pain can often be alleviated by making adjustments to your sleep environment and habits. By evaluating your sleep position, pillow, and mattress, along with incorporating stretching and stress management techniques, you can significantly improve your morning comfort and overall well-being. If issues persist, seeking professional advice is always a prudent step.
