Struggling with Weight Loss After Thyroid Issues: Seeking Nutritional Guidance - Nutrition

I want to lose weight?

Hello, I was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism in the second grade of elementary school, and I have been on medication until the summer after my first year of college.
I then underwent surgery, and currently, my T3 and T4 levels are within normal ranges, but my TSH is very low (it has always been low, and I don't know why).
During my schooling, due to my thyroid condition, I hardly participated in physical education classes, which resulted in obesity.
It seems that everyone in my family is also not slim.
I am currently 169.5 cm tall and weigh 80 kg.
I have been following a mostly vegetarian diet at home, with only a little bit of meat, but I still can't lose weight...
I hope a nutritionist can provide some guidance.
Thank you!

Hello! Regarding your thyroid issues, I recommend that you return to the hospital for follow-up examinations.
Factors contributing to obesity include diet, lifestyle habits, genetics, and diseases.
Based on your height, your ideal weight should be around 63 kilograms.
Vegetarian food can be delicious but often contains a lot of salt and fats, which may lead to higher calorie intake.
I suggest that you make whole grains the main part of your meals and increase your vegetable intake.
If you choose to eat meat, opt for lean cuts such as tenderloin or chicken breast, and avoid fatty meats like pork belly.
Try to select non-fried processed soy products and use minimal oil for cooking, avoiding frying methods.
Aim for 30-50 minutes of exercise daily.
Eating less and moving more is the key to weight loss! Wishing you good health.

Hello! Thank you for sharing your journey with thyroid issues and your struggles with weight loss. It sounds like you've been through quite a lot, and it's commendable that you're seeking nutritional guidance to help manage your weight.

First, it's important to understand that thyroid disorders, particularly hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism, can significantly impact metabolism and body weight. In your case, it seems you have a history of hyperthyroidism, which can lead to weight loss initially, but after treatment, many individuals experience weight gain or difficulty losing weight. This can be attributed to several factors, including changes in metabolism, hormonal imbalances, and lifestyle changes due to health conditions.

Given your current height of 169.5 cm and weight of 80 kg, your Body Mass Index (BMI) is approximately 27.9, which classifies you as overweight. It’s essential to approach weight loss in a healthy and sustainable manner, especially considering your medical history.

Nutritional Guidance
1. Balanced Diet: While you mentioned that you are following a near-vegetarian diet, it's crucial to ensure that it is balanced and provides all the necessary nutrients. A diet rich in whole grains, fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts, and seeds can be beneficial. However, ensure you are getting enough protein, which is vital for maintaining muscle mass and supporting metabolism. Consider incorporating plant-based protein sources such as lentils, chickpeas, quinoa, and tofu, or small amounts of lean meat or fish if you are comfortable with that.

2. Caloric Intake: Monitor your caloric intake to ensure you are in a slight deficit for weight loss. However, avoid extreme caloric restriction, as this can lead to nutritional deficiencies and may negatively impact your metabolism. A registered dietitian can help you determine your caloric needs based on your age, height, weight, activity level, and health goals.

3. Regular Meals: Eating regular meals throughout the day can help regulate your metabolism and prevent overeating. Aim for three balanced meals and healthy snacks if needed. This can help keep your energy levels stable and reduce cravings.

4. Hydration: Staying hydrated is essential for overall health and can aid in weight management. Sometimes, our bodies confuse thirst with hunger, leading to unnecessary snacking.

5. Physical Activity: Since you mentioned missing out on physical education during your school years, incorporating regular physical activity into your routine is crucial. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity each week, along with strength training exercises at least twice a week. This can help boost your metabolism and improve your overall health.

6. Monitor Thyroid Levels: Since you have a history of thyroid issues, regular monitoring of your thyroid hormone levels (T3, T4, and TSH) is essential. Low TSH levels can indicate hyperthyroidism or an overactive thyroid, which can affect your weight. Discuss any concerns with your healthcare provider, as they may need to adjust your medication or further investigate your thyroid function.

7. Seek Professional Help: Working with a registered dietitian or nutritionist who understands thyroid issues can provide personalized guidance tailored to your needs. They can help you create a meal plan that supports your weight loss goals while ensuring you receive adequate nutrition.

Conclusion
Weight management can be particularly challenging for individuals with thyroid issues, but with the right approach, it is possible to achieve your goals. Focus on a balanced diet, regular physical activity, and ongoing monitoring of your thyroid health. Remember, weight loss is a gradual process, and it's important to be patient and kind to yourself throughout this journey. If you have any further questions or need more specific advice, don't hesitate to reach out to a healthcare professional. Best of luck on your journey to better health!
