Honey for breakfast?

Hello, what are the benefits of drinking a cup of warm water with honey first thing in the morning before breakfast? (Usually one teaspoon of honey) Is this beneficial for the stomach? Since honey is still sugar, will drinking warm water with honey in the morning lead to diabetes? (My breakfast consists of homemade bread, some of which include oats, pumpkin, black sesame, and buckwheat, without added sugar or oil.)

Dear Sam,
Drinking honey water on an empty stomach is not beneficial for the stomach.
If you already have gastritis or a peptic ulcer, it is not advisable, as consuming sweet foods on an empty stomach can lead to excessive gastric acid secretion.
There are many causes of diabetes, and poor dietary habits are one of them.
If you have a family history of diabetes, high blood lipids, elevated blood sugar levels, or obesity, it is not recommended to continue drinking honey water every morning.
Wishing you peace and health,
Sincerely,

More Info

Drinking warm honey water before breakfast has been a popular practice for many, often touted for its potential health benefits. However, it's essential to consider both the positive aspects and the potential drawbacks, especially for individuals with specific health concerns such as diabetes or gastrointestinal issues.

Benefits of Drinking Warm Honey Water
1. Hydration: Starting your day with a glass of warm honey water can help rehydrate your body after a night of sleep. Proper hydration is crucial for maintaining bodily functions, including digestion and metabolism.

2. Digestive Aid: Honey has been known to possess prebiotic properties, which can promote the growth of beneficial gut bacteria. This can aid in digestion and improve gut health. Additionally, warm water can help stimulate the digestive system, preparing it for the intake of food.

3. Antioxidant Properties: Honey is rich in antioxidants, which can help combat oxidative stress in the body. This can contribute to overall health and may reduce the risk of chronic diseases.

4. Soothing Effect: For some, warm honey water can have a soothing effect on the throat and may help alleviate mild discomfort, especially if consumed during cold seasons.

Considerations for Gastric Health
While there are benefits, it's important to note that drinking honey water on an empty stomach may not be suitable for everyone. For individuals with pre-existing conditions such as gastritis or peptic ulcers, consuming sweet substances like honey can stimulate excessive gastric acid production, potentially leading to discomfort or exacerbating symptoms. If you have a history of such conditions, it may be wise to consult with a healthcare provider before incorporating this practice into your routine.

Concerns About Diabetes
Regarding the concern about diabetes, honey is indeed a form of sugar and can impact blood glucose levels. While a small amount of honey (like a teaspoon) may not significantly affect blood sugar for everyone, individuals with a family history of diabetes or those who are pre-diabetic should be cautious. The glycemic index of honey is lower than that of refined sugar, but it can still cause a rise in blood glucose levels.
If you have risk factors for diabetes, such as obesity, high blood pressure, or a family history of the disease, it's advisable to monitor your overall sugar intake, including natural sugars from honey. A balanced diet, rich in whole grains, fruits, and vegetables, along with regular physical activity, is crucial for maintaining healthy blood sugar levels.

Conclusion
In summary, drinking warm honey water before breakfast can offer several benefits, including hydration, digestive support, and antioxidant properties. However, individuals with specific health concerns, particularly those related to gastric health or diabetes, should approach this practice with caution. It's always best to consult with a healthcare professional to tailor dietary choices to your individual health needs.
Incorporating honey into a balanced breakfast, such as your homemade bread with oats, pumpkin, black sesame, and buckwheat, can be a delightful way to enjoy its benefits while ensuring you maintain a healthy diet. Remember, moderation is key, and being mindful of your body's responses will guide you in making the best choices for your health.
