Body shaping and weight loss?

I am 165 cm tall and weigh 62 kg.
Because my lower body is quite heavy, I really want to buy shapewear like compression stockings and bodysuits.
I would like to ask if wearing these items long-term will have any negative effects? Also, I sit for long periods, so I have a large abdomen.
Some people say that constantly squeezing it will make it smaller.
Is this true?

Jie Ting, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2011/02/27

Dr. Xie Huimin reply Nutrition

Wearing shapewear utilizes external pressure to improve body shape; however, without reducing caloric intake and increasing energy expenditure, it cannot lead to weight loss.
Prolonged sitting can cause abdominal muscles to weaken and fat to accumulate.
Remember to get up and move around periodically, and avoid sitting immediately after meals.
When sitting, also try to maintain abdominal contraction.

Shapewear and compression garments have gained popularity as tools for body shaping and weight loss, especially among individuals looking to enhance their appearance or feel more confident in their clothing. However, it's essential to understand the realistic effects and limitations of these garments in relation to weight loss and body composition.

Understanding Shapewear and Compression Garments
Shapewear is designed to provide a smoothing effect on the body, often targeting areas like the waist, hips, and thighs. Compression garments, on the other hand, are typically tighter and are often used for medical purposes, such as improving circulation or reducing swelling after surgery. While both types of garments can create a more streamlined appearance, they do not directly contribute to fat loss.

Do They Help with Weight Loss?
1. Temporary Effects: Wearing shapewear can temporarily reduce the appearance of body fat by compressing and redistributing fat tissue. This can make you look slimmer in the short term, especially under clothing. However, this effect is purely cosmetic and does not lead to actual fat loss.

2. No Fat Reduction: Compression garments do not burn fat or lead to weight loss. Fat loss occurs when there is a caloric deficit, meaning you burn more calories than you consume. Shapewear does not alter your metabolism or the way your body processes calories.

3. Long-Term Use: Long-term use of shapewear can lead to discomfort and may even affect your posture or circulation if worn excessively tight. It is crucial to choose the right size and not to wear them for extended periods, especially if you have underlying health conditions.

The Myth of "Squeezing" Fat Away
The idea that consistently wearing tight garments will lead to fat loss is a common misconception. While it may seem logical that compressing fat could lead to a reduction in size, the body does not work that way. Fat loss requires a combination of a balanced diet, regular exercise, and a healthy lifestyle. Simply wearing shapewear will not change your body composition or lead to sustainable weight loss.

Addressing Your Concerns
Given your height (165 cm) and weight (62 kg), if you are concerned about your lower body and abdominal area, it may be more beneficial to focus on a holistic approach to weight management:
1. Diet: Consider consulting with a nutritionist to develop a balanced eating plan that suits your lifestyle and helps you achieve your weight loss goals. Reducing calorie intake while ensuring you receive adequate nutrition is key.

2. Exercise: Incorporate both cardiovascular and strength training exercises into your routine. Cardio can help burn calories, while strength training can build muscle, which in turn can increase your resting metabolic rate. Even if you have a sedentary job, finding ways to incorporate movement throughout your day can be beneficial.

3. Posture and Core Strength: Strengthening your core muscles can help improve your posture and may reduce the appearance of a protruding abdomen. Exercises like planks, bridges, and abdominal workouts can be effective.

4. Hydration and Sleep: Staying hydrated and getting enough sleep are crucial for overall health and can impact weight management.

Conclusion
In summary, while shapewear and compression garments can provide a temporary cosmetic effect, they do not contribute to actual weight loss or fat reduction. For sustainable results, focus on a balanced diet, regular exercise, and healthy lifestyle choices. If you have specific concerns about your body composition or weight loss journey, consider consulting with healthcare professionals, such as a registered dietitian or a personal trainer, who can provide personalized guidance and support.
