Home remedies for treating arthritis..?

Hello, doctor.
My mother has arthritis and cannot walk or stand for long periods.
She heard that soaking raisins in gin can help with this issue.
Is this true? Also, my mom poured the gin that had been soaked for a year into a glass bottle that originally contained rice wine, thinking that since they are both alcoholic beverages, it would be fine not to wash the bottle first.
However, there are green bubbles forming.
Could you please help me understand this? Thank you!

Shan, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2013/07/21

Dr. Shi Guimei reply Nutrition

Dear Shan,
Hello! Your mother is suffering from arthritis and should seek treatment from a physician.
Please do not attempt any home remedies on your own.
The method you mentioned of soaking raisins in gin has no scientific evidence to support its benefits for arthritis; in fact, alcohol may pose risks to both arthritis and overall health.

Wishing you health and happiness!
Sincerely,
Dietitian Shih Kuei-Mei

The idea that soaked raisins in alcohol can cure arthritis is a popular home remedy that has circulated in various health circles. However, it is essential to approach such claims with caution and a critical eye. While some anecdotal evidence suggests that consuming raisins soaked in alcohol, particularly gin, may provide relief from arthritis symptoms, there is no substantial scientific evidence to support this assertion.

Raisins are rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals, which can contribute to overall health. They contain compounds like phenolic acids and flavonoids that may have anti-inflammatory properties. However, the amount of these beneficial compounds in soaked raisins is not sufficient to be considered a cure for arthritis. Arthritis, which includes various forms such as osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, is a complex condition that often requires a multifaceted approach to treatment, including medication, physical therapy, and lifestyle changes.

Regarding the preparation of soaked raisins, it is crucial to ensure that the process is done safely. If your mother poured a year-old infusion of raisins into a bottle that previously contained rice wine without cleaning it, the appearance of green bubbles could indicate fermentation or contamination. Alcohol can promote the growth of certain bacteria or yeasts, especially if the container was not properly sanitized. This could lead to the production of gases, resulting in bubbles. It is advisable to discard this mixture to avoid any potential health risks.

For arthritis management, it is essential to consult with healthcare professionals who can provide evidence-based treatments. Common treatments for arthritis include nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), physical therapy, and lifestyle modifications such as weight management and exercise. In some cases, more advanced treatments like corticosteroid injections or disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs) may be necessary.

In summary, while soaked raisins in alcohol may be a popular home remedy, it is not a scientifically validated treatment for arthritis. It is essential to prioritize safe practices in food preparation and consult healthcare professionals for effective management of arthritis symptoms. Encouraging your mother to engage in regular physical activity, maintain a healthy diet, and follow prescribed medical treatments will likely yield better results in managing her arthritis.
