Frequent angular cheilitis?

Hello, I would like to ask the doctor:
1.
Why do I frequently experience inflammation in my oral cavity? I am unsure if I am lacking certain nutrients or what foods I should eat more of.
I have noticed that when I consume toasted bread (American breakfast) and cookies (which I love), the inflammation occurs more often, especially when I am sleep-deprived.
I have already given up these two habits, but sometimes I still experience pain that lasts a long time and heals very slowly.
Additionally, I often consume unsweetened milk tea; could this have an impact?
2.
I frequently have fungal infections related to gynecological issues.
Are there any dietary changes or methods that could help improve this? I am married, and every time I see a doctor, they only advise me to stay dry and drink more yogurt.
However, I have nasal allergies and need to avoid cold foods, which makes it difficult to understand!
Please help me, as I am suffering greatly.
Thank you.

Dr. Xie Huimin reply Nutrition

Dear DD:
The first question regarding the causes of angular cheilitis may be related to nutritional deficiencies, particularly a deficiency in vitamin B2.
Foods rich in vitamin B2 include milk, meat, liver, eggs, and yeast, which can be consumed more frequently.
However, in modern times, a more common cause is autoimmune issues, which tend to occur during periods of high stress, during a woman's menstrual cycle, or after consuming foods known to be "heaty." It is advisable to identify personal triggers and make adjustments accordingly, although angular cheilitis may still occur.
When it does, consulting a dentist is recommended for appropriate medication and maintaining oral hygiene.
It is important to ensure that toothbrushes are kept clean to avoid infection, and regularly supplementing with a multivitamin may provide some benefit.
For the second question, adjusting one's diet to improve overall health is not easy.
It is recommended to consume more fruits and vegetables, with a suggested intake of 5-7 servings per day.
Additionally, it is advisable to frequently change undergarments and wash them at least twice a day, which may help alleviate symptoms.
Sincerely,
Hui-Min Hsieh

More Info

Hello! Thank you for reaching out with your questions regarding oral inflammation and dietary solutions. Oral inflammation, which can manifest as sores or ulcers in the mouth, can be quite painful and disruptive to daily life. Understanding the underlying causes and making appropriate dietary adjustments can significantly help in managing this condition.

Causes of Oral Inflammation
Oral inflammation can arise from various factors, including nutritional deficiencies, infections, stress, and certain medical conditions. One common nutritional deficiency linked to oral health is a lack of B vitamins, particularly vitamin B2 (riboflavin) and vitamin B12. Deficiencies in these vitamins can lead to inflammation and ulceration in the mouth. Additionally, inadequate intake of vitamin C can impair healing and contribute to gum issues.

Your observation about the correlation between consuming certain foods, like toasted bread and cookies, and the occurrence of oral sores is insightful. Foods that are high in sugar and refined carbohydrates can promote inflammation and may also contribute to yeast overgrowth in the body, which can exacerbate oral and other mucosal inflammations. Sleep deprivation can weaken the immune system, making you more susceptible to infections and inflammation.

Nutritional Recommendations
To improve your oral health and reduce inflammation, consider incorporating the following foods into your diet:
1. Dairy Products: Foods like yogurt and cheese are rich in calcium and can help maintain oral health. Yogurt, in particular, contains probiotics that may help balance the oral microbiome.

2. Lean Proteins: Foods such as chicken, fish, eggs, and legumes are excellent sources of protein and essential nutrients that support healing.

3. Fruits and Vegetables: Incorporate a variety of colorful fruits and vegetables, especially those high in vitamin C (like oranges, strawberries, and bell peppers) and vitamin A (like carrots and sweet potatoes), which can promote healing and boost your immune system.

4. Whole Grains: Opt for whole grains instead of refined carbohydrates. Whole grains provide essential nutrients and fiber, which can help maintain overall health.

5. Nuts and Seeds: These are good sources of healthy fats, vitamins, and minerals that support immune function and overall health.

6. Hydration: Staying well-hydrated is crucial for maintaining mucosal health. Aim to drink plenty of water throughout the day.

Addressing Fungal Infections
Regarding your concerns about recurrent fungal infections, particularly in the gynecological area, dietary adjustments can also play a role. A diet high in sugar can promote yeast growth, so reducing sugar intake is advisable. Additionally, consider the following:
- Probiotics: Consuming probiotic-rich foods like yogurt, kefir, and fermented vegetables can help maintain a healthy balance of bacteria in the body, potentially reducing the risk of yeast infections.

- Garlic: Known for its antifungal properties, incorporating garlic into your diet may help combat fungal infections.

- Avoiding Irritants: Since you have nasal allergies, it’s essential to avoid foods that may trigger your allergies or irritate your system. This includes avoiding cold foods if they exacerbate your symptoms.

Conclusion
In summary, addressing oral inflammation and recurrent fungal infections involves a multifaceted approach that includes dietary modifications, proper hydration, and possibly the inclusion of probiotics. It’s also essential to maintain a balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals to support your overall health. If symptoms persist, consider consulting a healthcare professional for further evaluation and personalized recommendations. Remember, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including adequate sleep and stress management, is equally important in managing these conditions. Wishing you better health and relief from your symptoms!
