How to increase height?
I am a student in a five-year vocational program, and I am currently in my first year of college.
My height is around 154 cm, and I have not grown much taller.
My weight is 46 kg, which is normal, but I am very concerned about my height.
Is it still possible for me to grow taller at this height? Every time I see advertisements on TV, I can't help but want to buy the products, but I am also afraid of potential side effects, so I haven't purchased anything.
What should I eat to help me grow taller?

Hello: Generally speaking, girls tend to reach their full height between the ages of 12 and 16, while boys may continue to grow until around 20 years old.
However, there is significant individual variation.
Scientifically, this can be assessed by measuring whether the growth plates in the bones have fused; once the growth plates are fused, it becomes difficult to increase height.
Products advertised on television seem to be ineffective.
The best approach remains proper nutrition and exercise, including adequate intake of nutrients and calcium, along with regular physical activities such as jumping rope, playing basketball, and swimming!
Thank you, Hsiao-Hui Min.

As a college student concerned about your height, it’s understandable to seek ways to potentially increase it, especially since you are currently 154 cm tall. The good news is that there are several factors that can influence height, including genetics, nutrition, and lifestyle choices.
Firstly, it’s important to recognize that growth in height typically occurs during puberty, which for females generally concludes around the ages of 12 to 16. However, some individuals may continue to grow slightly into their late teens, depending on when they hit puberty and the status of their growth plates. The growth plates are areas of developing cartilage tissue near the ends of long bones, and once they fuse, further height increase is unlikely. A medical professional can assess your growth plates through an X-ray to determine if you still have potential for growth.
In terms of nutrition, a balanced diet plays a crucial role in supporting growth. Here are some key nutrients that can help:
1. Protein: Essential for growth and development, protein helps in building and repairing tissues. Good sources include lean meats, fish, eggs, dairy products, legumes, and nuts.
2. Calcium: This mineral is vital for bone health and growth. Aim for at least two servings of dairy products daily, such as low-fat milk or yogurt, which can provide the necessary calcium. Each serving is typically around 240 ml (about 8 ounces).
3. Vitamin D: This vitamin is important for calcium absorption and bone health. You can obtain vitamin D from sunlight exposure, fatty fish, fortified dairy products, and egg yolks.
4. Other Minerals: Magnesium and zinc also play roles in growth. Foods rich in magnesium include whole grains, nuts, and green leafy vegetables, while zinc can be found in meat, shellfish, legumes, and seeds.
5. Hydration: Staying well-hydrated is essential for overall health and can support metabolic processes that contribute to growth.
In addition to nutrition, regular physical activity is crucial. Engaging in exercises that promote stretching and strengthening, such as swimming, basketball, or skipping rope, can be beneficial. These activities can stimulate growth hormone production, which is essential for growth during adolescence.
Sleep is another critical factor. Growth hormone is primarily secreted during deep sleep, so ensuring you get adequate rest is vital. Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night, and try to maintain a consistent sleep schedule.
Lastly, while it can be tempting to consider supplements or products advertised on television that claim to increase height, it’s important to approach these with caution. Many of these products lack scientific backing and could potentially have side effects. Instead, focus on a healthy lifestyle that includes a balanced diet, regular exercise, and sufficient sleep.
In conclusion, while your height may be influenced by genetics, there are still steps you can take to support your growth potential. Prioritize a balanced diet rich in essential nutrients, engage in regular physical activity, and ensure you get enough sleep. If you have ongoing concerns about your height or growth, consider consulting a healthcare professional for personalized advice and assessment.
