Hair is thinning!!!
Hello Dietitian Liu,
I am 22 years old, but I have noticed that my hair on the top of my head is a bit thinning...
It seems like it wasn't like this before; I've only started to notice it in recent years! I'm not sure what the reason is, and I'm quite worried.
Is there anything I should pay attention to? Should I increase my intake of certain foods or vitamins? Are there any dietary considerations I should keep in mind? Thank you, Steve.
Steve, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2007/09/08
Dr. Liu Qiaoyun reply Nutrition
Steve: Hello, regarding foods that can promote hair density, I personally haven't seen specific research reports.
Perhaps diet isn't the primary influencing factor! I suggest consulting a dermatologist for more insights.
I'm sorry I couldn't be of more help, don't be discouraged! Wishing you all the best!

Hello Steve,
Thank you for reaching out with your concerns about hair thinning. It's understandable to feel worried when you notice changes in your hair, especially at a young age like 22. Hair thinning can be influenced by a variety of factors, including genetics, hormonal changes, nutritional deficiencies, and lifestyle choices. Let's explore some nutritional tips and dietary considerations that may help promote healthy hair growth.
Nutritional Factors for Healthy Hair Growth
1. Protein Intake: Hair is primarily made of a protein called keratin. Therefore, ensuring you consume enough protein is crucial for hair health. Include sources such as lean meats, fish, eggs, dairy products, legumes, and nuts in your diet. Aim for a balanced intake of these foods to support hair structure and growth.
2. Vitamins and Minerals:
- Biotin (Vitamin B7): Biotin is essential for hair health. It helps in the production of keratin and can be found in foods like eggs, nuts, seeds, and whole grains.
- Vitamin D: This vitamin plays a role in the hair growth cycle. You can get vitamin D from sunlight exposure, fatty fish, fortified foods, and supplements if necessary.
- Iron: Iron deficiency can lead to hair loss. Include iron-rich foods such as red meat, spinach, lentils, and fortified cereals. Pairing iron-rich foods with vitamin C sources (like citrus fruits) can enhance absorption.
- Zinc: Zinc is important for hair tissue growth and repair. Foods rich in zinc include meat, shellfish, legumes, seeds, nuts, dairy, and whole grains.
3. Healthy Fats: Omega-3 fatty acids are known to nourish hair follicles and promote hair growth. Incorporate sources like fatty fish (salmon, mackerel), walnuts, flaxseeds, and chia seeds into your diet.
4. Hydration: Staying well-hydrated is essential for overall health, including hair health. Aim to drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep your body and hair hydrated.
Lifestyle Considerations
1. Stress Management: High-stress levels can contribute to hair thinning. Consider incorporating stress-reducing activities such as yoga, meditation, or regular exercise into your routine.
2. Sleep: Ensure you are getting enough quality sleep. Sleep is vital for overall health and can impact hair growth.
3. Avoiding Harsh Treatments: Limit the use of harsh hair treatments, such as excessive heat styling, chemical treatments, or tight hairstyles that can cause breakage.
4. Regular Scalp Care: A healthy scalp is crucial for hair growth. Consider gentle scalp massages to improve blood circulation and promote hair follicles' health.
When to Seek Professional Help
If you notice significant hair thinning or if it continues despite dietary and lifestyle changes, it may be beneficial to consult a healthcare professional or a dermatologist. They can help determine if there are underlying health issues, such as hormonal imbalances or nutritional deficiencies, that need to be addressed.
In summary, focusing on a balanced diet rich in proteins, vitamins, and minerals, along with maintaining a healthy lifestyle, can significantly contribute to promoting healthy hair growth. Remember, changes in hair health can take time, so be patient and consistent with your efforts.
Best wishes on your journey to healthier hair!
Sincerely,
