Can people with gastrointestinal issues drink yogurt?
Hello, doctor.
Due to my ongoing gastrointestinal issues, I frequently experience diarrhea (a few times a month, lasting anywhere from 3 to 5 days each time).
After undergoing examinations at a major hospital, the doctor concluded that there are no other problems (such as tumors, etc.), and determined that it is likely just poor gastrointestinal function.
Because of this, I would like to know if I can consume yogurt and similar beverages.
My family says that people with gastrointestinal issues should not drink yogurt often, but yogurt is marketed as beneficial for digestion and gut health.
Am I suitable for consuming yogurt and similar products? Thank you very much.

Dear KK,
Hello! You mentioned experiencing diarrhea several times a month, lasting anywhere from 3 to 5 days each time.
I would like to know if you also experience constipation.
If you frequently alternate between constipation and diarrhea, it could be indicative of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), which is often triggered by stress.
Some instances of diarrhea can also be stress-related.
It would be beneficial to assess your daily stress levels and whether your lifestyle is irregular.
If so, the solution lies in making adjustments.
Regardless of your gastrointestinal function, it is advisable to consume yogurt in moderation, as it is a dairy product and contains a high amount of sugar.
Excessive consumption can be detrimental to your health.
Based on your condition, about 1 to 2 cups per day would be appropriate, with each cup being approximately 240 cc.
Wishing you peace and health!
Sincerely,
Dietitian Shih Kuei-Mei

When it comes to digestive issues, particularly those characterized by symptoms like diarrhea, the consumption of yogurt and other fermented dairy products can be a topic of debate. Yogurt, especially those containing live probiotic cultures, is often touted for its potential benefits in promoting gut health. However, whether or not it is suitable for someone with digestive problems depends on several factors.
Firstly, yogurt is rich in probiotics, which are beneficial bacteria that can help restore the natural balance of gut flora. For individuals suffering from gastrointestinal disturbances, including diarrhea, probiotics may help in several ways. They can enhance the gut barrier function, modulate the immune response, and even compete with pathogenic bacteria, potentially alleviating some symptoms. In fact, some studies suggest that probiotics can be effective in reducing the duration and severity of diarrhea, particularly in cases of antibiotic-associated diarrhea or infectious diarrhea.
However, it's essential to consider the type of yogurt consumed. Not all yogurts are created equal. Some commercial yogurts are high in sugar, which can exacerbate digestive issues for some individuals. Additionally, those who are lactose intolerant may find that traditional dairy yogurts cause more harm than good, leading to bloating, gas, and further diarrhea. For lactose-intolerant individuals, lactose-free yogurt or those made from non-dairy alternatives (such as almond, coconut, or soy) might be more suitable options.
Moreover, the quality of the yogurt matters. Look for yogurts that specifically state they contain live and active cultures, as these are the probiotics that can provide health benefits. Greek yogurt, for example, is often higher in protein and lower in sugar than regular yogurt, making it a potentially better choice for those with digestive concerns.
It's also important to listen to your body. If you try yogurt and notice that your symptoms worsen, it may be best to avoid it. On the other hand, if you find that it helps improve your digestion, it can be a beneficial addition to your diet.
In conclusion, individuals with digestive issues may benefit from consuming yogurt, particularly those with live probiotic cultures. However, it is crucial to choose the right type of yogurt and to monitor how your body responds to it. Consulting with a healthcare professional or a registered dietitian can provide personalized advice tailored to your specific digestive health needs. They can help you navigate your dietary choices and determine whether yogurt or other probiotic-rich foods are appropriate for your situation.
