Weight-gain snacks
Dear Director Shi,
I have been experiencing weight loss, bloating, and diarrhea.
I also find that consuming sweets often leads to acid reflux.
My lower extremities, particularly the soles of my feet, frequently swell, although my kidney function is normal.
I have had difficulty walking since childhood and have a history of urinary stones.
Additionally, my blood pressure often falls below 90/60.
Could you please recommend some easily accessible snacks that can be consumed warm? Thank you very much for your assistance.
Best regards.
An An, 60~69 year old female. Ask Date: 2012/06/23
Dr. Shi Guimei reply Nutrition
Dear An-An,
Hello! Based on the situation you described, I recommend that you consult a gastroenterologist.
Currently, you should avoid consuming sweets, greasy foods, fried foods, rich broths, and vegetables high in coarse fiber (such as bamboo shoots and celery), as well as fruits that are overly sweet, sour, or high in coarse fiber (such as strawberries, bananas, lychees, longans, and pineapples), coffee, and tea.
You should eat regular, small meals, chew thoroughly, and avoid having meals consisting solely of carbohydrates; each meal should include a good source of protein and a moderate amount of fat.
Maintain a regular lifestyle, avoid staying up late, and do not smoke.
For easily accessible and warm snacks, you can consume 2 servings of low-fat milk daily (each serving consists of 3 tablespoons of low-fat milk powder mixed with 240cc of water), or you can supplement with a balanced nutritional formula powder mixed with warm water.
Wishing you health and happiness!
Sincerely,
Shih Kuei-Mei,
Director of the Nutrition Department, Taoyuan Hospital, Ministry of Health and Welfare

When it comes to managing weight gain while dealing with digestive issues, it's essential to choose snacks that are not only nutritious but also gentle on the stomach. Given your symptoms of bloating, diarrhea, and a tendency to experience acid reflux after consuming sweets, it's crucial to select options that are low in sugar and high in fiber, while also being easy to digest. Here are some healthy snack options that can help you gain weight without exacerbating your digestive problems:
1. Greek Yogurt with Honey and Berries: Greek yogurt is rich in protein and probiotics, which can aid digestion. Adding a small amount of honey can provide a touch of sweetness without overwhelming your system. Berries are also high in antioxidants and fiber, making them a great addition.
2. Nut Butter on Whole Grain Toast: Whole grain bread is a good source of fiber, and nut butter (like almond or peanut butter) is calorie-dense and provides healthy fats and protein. This combination can help you feel full and satisfied.
3. Smoothies: A smoothie made with spinach, banana, and a scoop of protein powder can be a nutritious option. You can also add nut butter or avocado for healthy fats. Just be cautious with the amount of fruit you use to avoid excess sugar.
4. Oatmeal with Nut Milk: Oatmeal is a great source of fiber and can help with digestion. Prepare it with almond or coconut milk for added creaminess and calories. You can top it with seeds or nuts for extra nutrition.
5. Rice Cakes with Avocado: Rice cakes are light and easy to digest. Topping them with mashed avocado provides healthy fats and fiber, which can help with satiety.
6. Hummus with Vegetables: Hummus is made from chickpeas, which are high in protein and fiber. Pair it with easy-to-digest vegetables like cucumber or bell peppers for a nutritious snack.
7. Cottage Cheese with Pineapple: Cottage cheese is high in protein and can be paired with pineapple for a sweet touch. Pineapple contains bromelain, an enzyme that may help with digestion.
8. Hard-Boiled Eggs: Eggs are a great source of protein and healthy fats. They are easy to prepare in advance and can be eaten warm or cold.
9. Pumpkin Seeds: These are nutrient-dense and provide healthy fats, protein, and fiber. They can be a great snack on their own or added to other foods.
10. Homemade Energy Bites: You can make energy bites using oats, nut butter, and a small amount of honey or maple syrup. These can be stored in the fridge and are easy to grab when you need a snack.
Additional Considerations:
- Hydration: Given your history of low blood pressure and potential digestive issues, staying hydrated is crucial. However, be mindful of your fluid intake to avoid water retention. Aim for balanced hydration throughout the day.
- Portion Control: Since you are looking to gain weight, consider increasing portion sizes gradually rather than consuming large amounts of food at once, which can lead to discomfort.
- Frequent Small Meals: Instead of three large meals, try to have smaller, more frequent meals and snacks throughout the day. This can help manage digestive issues while ensuring adequate calorie intake.
- Monitor Your Body's Response: Keep track of how your body reacts to different foods. This can help you identify any specific triggers that may worsen your digestive symptoms.
In conclusion, focusing on nutrient-dense, easy-to-digest snacks can help you manage your weight gain while addressing your digestive concerns. It's always a good idea to consult with a healthcare professional or a registered dietitian to tailor a plan that suits your specific needs and conditions.
