Regarding the dosage of dietary supplements?

Hello, Doctor.
There are many health supplement stores appearing in the market.
I have been using Herbalife for a year, following my coach's instructions to take a large amount of vitamins, fish oil, krill oil, and effervescent tablets daily.
Recently, I saw in online news that effervescent tablets should not be taken every day because they contain ingredients that can easily form stones.
However, my coach said that when she feels tired, she drinks effervescent tablets, taking three tablets daily! I take three fish oil capsules every day, one krill oil capsule, and one serving of collagen, Night Recovery, and a berry complex daily.
Doctor, is this excessive intake problematic?

yt.chan, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2014/10/29

Dr. Shi Guimei reply Nutrition

Dear yt.chan,
Hello! At your age, a balanced diet is sufficient, and there is no need to supplement with the health products you mentioned, especially since you indicated that you consume them in large quantities, which could potentially pose health risks.
In Taiwan, health foods are regulated under the Health Food Management Act, and many businesses claim their products are health supplements to evade these regulations.
In reality, these products may just be regular foods that are concentrated into liquids, capsules, or tablets, which can lead to excessive intake and harm your health.
You can visit the website of the Ministry of Health and Welfare's Food and Drug Administration to check the list of approved health foods and their health benefits, and supplement according to your health needs to avoid wasting money and risking your health.
Wishing you good health!
Sincerely,
Dietitian Shih Kuei-Mei

When it comes to dietary supplements, understanding safe dosages is crucial for maintaining health and avoiding potential adverse effects. The increasing popularity of dietary supplements, such as vitamins, fish oil, shrimp oil, and effervescent tablets, often leads to questions about their safety and efficacy, especially when consumed in large quantities.

Firstly, it’s important to recognize that while dietary supplements can provide health benefits, they are not a substitute for a balanced diet. The body requires a variety of nutrients that are best obtained through whole foods. Supplements should be used to complement the diet, not replace it.
Regarding the specific supplements you mentioned:
1. Vitamins: While vitamins are essential for various bodily functions, excessive intake can lead to toxicity. For example, fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, and K) can accumulate in the body and cause adverse effects if taken in excess. Water-soluble vitamins (like B vitamins and vitamin C) are generally excreted through urine, but high doses can still lead to side effects. It’s crucial to adhere to the recommended dietary allowances (RDAs) for vitamins and consult with a healthcare provider before taking high doses.

2. Fish Oil and Shrimp Oil: Omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oil are known for their anti-inflammatory properties and cardiovascular benefits. However, high doses can increase the risk of bleeding, especially if you are taking blood-thinning medications. The American Heart Association recommends a maximum of 3 grams of EPA and DHA combined per day for general health, and higher doses should be supervised by a healthcare professional.

3. Effervescent Tablets: These often contain various vitamins and minerals, but as you noted, some formulations may include ingredients that can contribute to kidney stones, such as excessive vitamin C or calcium. It’s essential to read labels carefully and be aware of the ingredients. Consuming three effervescent tablets daily may exceed the recommended limits for certain nutrients, particularly if they contain high levels of vitamin C or other minerals.

4. Collagen and Other Supplements: Collagen supplements are generally considered safe, but their effectiveness can vary. The same goes for other supplements like "night cream" or "complex berries," which may contain various herbal ingredients. Always check for any potential interactions with medications or other supplements you are taking.

In summary, while it may seem beneficial to take multiple supplements daily, it’s crucial to consider the total intake of each nutrient and adhere to recommended dosages. Overconsumption can lead to adverse effects, and individual needs can vary based on age, sex, health status, and lifestyle.
Before making any significant changes to your supplement regimen, especially if you are consuming large quantities, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare professional or a registered dietitian. They can provide personalized recommendations based on your health history and dietary needs, ensuring that you are taking supplements safely and effectively.
In conclusion, while dietary supplements can play a role in health maintenance, moderation and informed choices are key. Always prioritize a balanced diet and consult with professionals to tailor your supplement intake to your individual health requirements.
