Breaking Through Weight Loss Plateaus: Tips and Concerns - Physical Fitness

Slimming bottle tight?

Hello, I am 165 cm tall and my weight increased to 72 kg after giving birth.
After six months of exercise and dietary control, I have lost 9 kg (down to around 63 kg).
My body fat percentage decreased from 42% to 31%, and I have maintained my weight for six months without regaining.
I currently keep a routine of aerobic exercise 2-3 times a week and yoga 1-2 times a week.
However, I have noticed that it is now difficult to lose more weight and body fat; I can't seem to drop below 62 kg.
Could this be what is referred to as a plateau? If I use medications like orlistat in conjunction with exercise, would that help me break through the plateau? However, I am also concerned about the side effects of the medication.
Thank you.

Mei, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2005/01/21

May: When weight loss reaches a plateau, it indicates that absorption and metabolism have reached a balance.
Therefore, it is advisable to reduce the intake of high-fat and high-carbohydrate foods (sugars and starches) and to increase the body's metabolic rate.
It is recommended to engage in aerobic exercise three to five times a week, while maintaining yoga sessions one to two times a week.
Drinking unsweetened tea and coffee can help boost metabolism, but should not exceed three cups per day.
The price of Nometine is approximately NT$3500 to NT$3600.
The main side effects include dry mouth, constipation, and insomnia.
It is not recommended for individuals with mental health disorders, those under 18 years old, over 65 years old, pregnant or breastfeeding women, women planning to become pregnant, and those with heart failure, arrhythmias, or significant fluctuations in blood pressure.
It is best to consult a physician for evaluation before starting Nometine.
Sincerely, Dr.

Breaking through weight loss plateaus can be a frustrating experience, especially after making significant progress like you have. It sounds like you've done an excellent job of losing weight and improving your body composition, but hitting a plateau is a common occurrence in weight loss journeys.
When you lose weight, your body undergoes several physiological changes that can make it harder to continue losing weight. One of the primary reasons for plateaus is that as you lose weight, your basal metabolic rate (BMR) decreases. This means your body requires fewer calories to maintain its current weight. Consequently, the caloric deficit that once led to weight loss may no longer be sufficient.
Here are some tips and considerations to help you break through your plateau:
1. Reassess Your Caloric Intake: As you lose weight, your caloric needs change. It may be beneficial to recalculate your daily caloric needs based on your current weight and activity level. You might need to reduce your caloric intake slightly to create a new deficit.

2. Increase Physical Activity: While you are already engaging in regular aerobic exercise and yoga, consider incorporating strength training into your routine. Building muscle can help increase your metabolism, which may aid in breaking through the plateau. Additionally, varying your workout routine can prevent your body from adapting to the same exercises.

3. Monitor Macronutrient Ratios: Sometimes, adjusting the ratios of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats in your diet can help. Increasing protein intake can help with muscle retention and satiety, while reducing carbohydrates may help some individuals break through plateaus.

4. Stay Hydrated: Sometimes, water retention can mask weight loss. Ensure you are drinking enough water throughout the day, as dehydration can also affect your metabolism.

5. Consider Intermittent Fasting: Some people find success with intermittent fasting, which can help reduce overall caloric intake and improve metabolic flexibility.

6. Evaluate Stress and Sleep: High stress levels and inadequate sleep can hinder weight loss efforts. Ensure you are managing stress effectively and getting enough restorative sleep each night.

7. Consult a Professional: If you are considering medications like orlistat (known as "诺美婷" in Chinese), it's essential to consult with a healthcare provider. While such medications can assist with weight loss, they may come with side effects, and a healthcare provider can help you weigh the benefits against the risks. They can also provide guidance on whether medication is appropriate for your situation.

8. Be Patient and Kind to Yourself: Weight loss is not always linear, and plateaus are a normal part of the process. Focus on non-scale victories, such as improved fitness levels, increased energy, or better overall health, rather than just the number on the scale.

In summary, hitting a weight loss plateau is common and can be addressed through various strategies, including reassessing your caloric intake, increasing physical activity, and making dietary adjustments. If you are considering medication, consult with a healthcare professional to ensure it aligns with your health goals and needs. Remember to be patient and kind to yourself during this process, as sustainable weight loss takes time and effort.
