Calories and Weight Loss
Hello: My current height and weight are 160 cm and 60 kg.
Since I will be a bridesmaid for a friend at the end of the year, I hope to lose 10 kg.
However, I have already been on a weight loss journey for a year and a half (losing nearly 30 kg) through jogging and dietary control.
I run almost every day for at least 10 kilometers, in addition to brisk walking or strength training.
My caloric intake is not particularly low (around 1300 calories per day), and it has become challenging to either increase my exercise or decrease my food intake further, making it difficult to lose more weight.
I would like to ask the doctor what I should do.
Is the currently popular "ketogenic diet" or "sugar-free diet" truly effective and safe for the body? Additionally, since it's my birthday, my mother cooked braised pork knuckles and smoked shark.
I would like to ask the doctor about the caloric content of smoked shark per 100 grams, and how to calculate the calories if I only eat the lean meat of the braised pork knuckles without the skin and fat.
I couldn't find this information in the food nutrition database, so I am asking you here.
Thank you very much!

Hello, based on your description, it seems you are experiencing a weight loss plateau.
I recommend reviewing and adjusting your dietary intake to boost your metabolic rate.
For instance, you can incorporate high-protein foods, avoid simple carbohydrates (sweets), and choose spices like ginger, scallions, garlic, and chili peppers to enhance metabolism during this plateau.
Regarding the ketogenic diet, it requires strict control of carbohydrate intake, which may be challenging due to the significant dietary changes involved.
Additionally, the ketogenic diet produces a large amount of ketone bodies, which can lead to ketoacidosis if not monitored properly, posing potential health risks.
While braised pork knuckles consist mainly of lean meat, they still contain fat and calories, so portion control is essential.
Smoked shark meat, made from smoked shark, has an estimated caloric value of about 110 calories per 100 grams, making it a high-protein, low-fat food that can be consumed in moderation.
Lastly, please be mindful to avoid excessive salt intake during your weight loss journey to prevent water retention.
This advice is provided by Dietitian Tsai Hsiu-Wen from Nantou Hospital, Ministry of Health and Welfare.
Wishing you safety and health.

More Info
To effectively lose weight, especially when you have already made significant progress, it’s essential to focus on a balanced approach that combines nutrition and exercise. Given your height of 160 cm and weight of 60 kg, aiming to lose 10 kg by the end of the year is an ambitious but achievable goal, especially considering your prior success in losing 30 kg over the past year and a half. However, it’s crucial to ensure that your weight loss methods are sustainable and healthy.
Understanding Weight Loss
Weight loss fundamentally revolves around the concept of energy balance: consuming fewer calories than your body expends. While you have been successful in maintaining a calorie deficit through running and dietary control, it’s important to recognize that as you lose weight, your body’s caloric needs decrease. This means that the same caloric intake may not yield the same weight loss results as before.
Nutrition Strategies
1. Caloric Intake: You mentioned consuming around 1300 calories per day. While this may have been effective initially, it’s important to ensure that you are not under-eating, as this can lead to metabolic slowdown and nutrient deficiencies. A registered dietitian can help you determine a more appropriate caloric intake based on your activity level and weight loss goals.
2. Macronutrient Balance: Instead of drastically cutting calories, consider adjusting your macronutrient ratios. A balanced diet that includes adequate protein, healthy fats, and complex carbohydrates can help maintain muscle mass while promoting fat loss. Protein is particularly important as it can help with satiety and muscle preservation.
3. Hydration: Sometimes, our bodies can confuse thirst with hunger. Ensure you are well-hydrated, as this can also aid in weight loss and overall health.
4. Mindful Eating: Pay attention to your eating habits. Eating slowly and being mindful of portion sizes can help prevent overeating, even when consuming healthy foods.
Exercise Considerations
1. Variety in Workouts: While running is an excellent cardiovascular exercise, incorporating a variety of workouts can help prevent plateaus. Consider adding strength training, high-intensity interval training (HIIT), or different forms of cardio to your routine. This not only helps in burning calories but also builds muscle, which can increase your resting metabolic rate.
2. Rest and Recovery: Ensure you are allowing your body adequate time to recover. Overtraining can lead to fatigue and may hinder your weight loss efforts.
Exploring Diet Trends
Regarding the trending diets like ketogenic or sugar-free diets, they can be effective for some individuals but may not be suitable for everyone. The ketogenic diet, for instance, emphasizes high fat and low carbohydrate intake, which can lead to rapid weight loss initially. However, it can also be challenging to maintain long-term and may lead to nutrient deficiencies if not carefully planned. It’s advisable to consult with a healthcare professional before making significant dietary changes.
Nutritional Information Inquiry
As for the specific foods you mentioned:
- Shark Smoked Fish: The caloric content can vary based on preparation methods and specific brands. Generally, smoked fish can range from 200 to 300 calories per 100 grams. It’s best to check the packaging or consult a nutrition database for precise information.
- Braised Pork Knuckle: If you are consuming only the lean meat and avoiding the skin and fat, you can estimate the caloric content by looking at similar cuts of pork. Lean pork typically contains around 143 calories per 100 grams. However, the braising process may add additional calories from sauces or cooking fats, so it’s wise to consider that in your calculations.
Conclusion
In summary, effective weight loss is a multifaceted approach that requires attention to both diet and exercise. Given your current routine and dietary practices, it may be beneficial to reassess your caloric intake and macronutrient distribution, incorporate a variety of exercises, and consider professional guidance to optimize your weight loss journey. Remember, sustainable changes are key to long-term success, and it’s important to prioritize your overall health and well-being throughout this process.
