Diet Before and After Uterine Fibroid Surgery
Hello Dr.
Huang, many of my female friends in Taiwan have issues with uterine fibroids, and some have even undergone surgery for fibroids more than twice.
I am also scheduled for surgery at the end of October this year.
I would like to ask for your dietary recommendations before and after the fibroid surgery.
Thank you, Anne.
Anne, 40~49 year old female. Ask Date: 2006/10/20
Dr. Huang Shuli reply Nutrition
Dear Anne,
Hello! Before the surgery, please pay attention to whether you are underweight or overweight, and maintain an ideal body weight.
It is important to consume a balanced diet consisting of six food groups: dairy, meat, fish, eggs, legumes, grains, vegetables, fruits, and fats.
Avoid selective eating to ensure your body stores enough micronutrients (vitamins and minerals) needed for post-surgery recovery.
After the surgery, continue to maintain a balanced diet, focusing on lighter foods while ensuring adequate intake of protein and micronutrients.
Also, I am a nutritionist, not a physician.
Thank you.
Wishing you all the best,
Dietitian Huang Shuli, Hsinchu Hospital

More Info
Dear Anne,
Thank you for your question regarding nutritional recommendations before and after uterine fibroid surgery. Preparing for surgery and ensuring proper recovery is crucial, especially for women dealing with conditions like fibroids. Here’s a comprehensive guide to help you navigate your dietary needs during this time.
Pre-Surgery Nutrition
1. Balanced Diet: Prior to surgery, it’s essential to maintain a balanced diet that includes all six food groups: dairy, protein (meat, fish, eggs, legumes), grains, vegetables, fruits, and fats. This balance ensures that your body has adequate nutrients to support healing and recovery.
2. Weight Management: If you are underweight or overweight, aim to reach a healthy weight before your surgery. This can help reduce the risk of complications during and after the procedure.
3. Micronutrients: Focus on foods rich in vitamins and minerals, particularly iron and vitamin C. Iron-rich foods (like spinach, lentils, and fortified cereals) can help prevent anemia, which is particularly important if you have heavy menstrual bleeding due to fibroids. Vitamin C (found in citrus fruits, strawberries, and bell peppers) enhances iron absorption.
4. Hydration: Stay well-hydrated by drinking plenty of water. Proper hydration supports overall health and can help with digestion.
5. Avoid Certain Foods: Limit the intake of processed foods, high-sugar items, and excessive caffeine or alcohol, as these can negatively impact your health and recovery.
Post-Surgery Nutrition
1. Protein Intake: After surgery, your body will need protein to repair tissues and heal wounds. Incorporate lean meats, fish, eggs, dairy, legumes, and nuts into your meals. If you follow a vegetarian or vegan diet, ensure you are consuming enough plant-based protein sources.
2. Fiber-Rich Foods: While it’s important to consume fiber for digestive health, be mindful of your body’s needs post-surgery. Gradually reintroduce fiber-rich foods like whole grains, fruits, and vegetables to avoid gastrointestinal discomfort.
3. Hydration: Continue to drink plenty of fluids post-surgery. This is crucial for recovery and helps prevent constipation, which can be a concern after surgery.
4. Avoid Irritating Foods: In the initial days post-surgery, it may be wise to avoid spicy foods, caffeine, and alcohol, as these can irritate your digestive system and potentially affect your recovery.
5. Small, Frequent Meals: Eating smaller, more frequent meals can help manage any nausea or discomfort you may experience after surgery.
6. Supplements: If you find it challenging to meet your nutritional needs through food alone, consider high-protein nutritional supplements, such as protein shakes or powders. These can be beneficial in ensuring you get enough protein without feeling overly full.
Additional Considerations
- Consult with a Nutritionist: If possible, work with a registered dietitian or nutritionist who can tailor a meal plan specific to your needs and preferences.
- Listen to Your Body: Pay attention to how your body responds to different foods post-surgery. Everyone’s recovery is unique, and it’s important to adjust your diet accordingly.
In summary, focusing on a balanced diet rich in proteins, vitamins, and minerals before and after your uterine fibroid surgery will support your recovery and overall health. Best wishes for your surgery and a smooth recovery!
