Post-Surgery Nutrition: When to Start Eating Supplements After Uterine Fibroid Removal - Nutrition

How long after surgery is it appropriate to start supplementation?

As per the title, I had surgery to remove uterine fibroids on January 2, 2002.
I am unsure how long after the surgery I should start taking supplements.
I often experience digestive issues, bloating, cold hands and feet in winter, and I am prone to heatiness.
I am not very clear on what kind of supplements I should take.
Yesterday, on January 10, my husband bought me stewed Four Substance Chicken from a store.
Interestingly, since my surgery, my discharge has only been yellowish.
However, after eating it, the discharge has changed to a light red color starting last night and continuing today.
I am unsure if this is a problem.
Please help me with your advice.
Thank you.

Your question may be better addressed by a gynecologist and a traditional Chinese medicine practitioner.
From a nutritionist's perspective, the first thing to consider is whether your nutrition is balanced before discussing supplementation.

After undergoing a uterine fibroid removal surgery, also known as a myomectomy or hysterectomy, it is essential to focus on proper nutrition to support recovery and overall health. Given your concerns about digestive issues, cold extremities, and the changes in your discharge after consuming certain foods, let’s break down the nutritional recommendations and considerations for post-surgery recovery.

Nutritional Guidelines Post-Surgery
1. Balanced Diet: After surgery, it is crucial to maintain a balanced diet that includes a variety of nutrients. Focus on incorporating fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and protein sources. Since you follow a vegetarian diet (ovo-lacto), ensure you include:
- Protein: Eggs, dairy products (like yogurt and cheese), and plant-based proteins (such as beans, lentils, and tofu) are excellent sources of protein that aid in tissue repair and recovery.

- Fruits and Vegetables: Aim for a colorful variety to ensure you get a wide range of vitamins and minerals. These foods also provide fiber, which is important for digestive health.

- Whole Grains: Foods like brown rice, quinoa, and whole grain bread can help with energy levels and provide necessary nutrients.

2. Hydration: Staying hydrated is vital for recovery. Drink plenty of fluids, such as water, herbal teas, and broths. This can help with digestion and prevent constipation, which is a common issue after surgery.

3. Supplements: If you are considering supplements, it is generally advisable to wait until you are able to eat a balanced diet comfortably. However, if you have specific deficiencies or concerns (like digestive issues), you might consider:
- Probiotics: These can help restore gut health, especially if you have experienced digestive disturbances.

- Iron: If you are experiencing heavy bleeding or have low energy, an iron supplement might be beneficial, but consult with your healthcare provider first.

- Multivitamins: A general multivitamin can help fill any nutritional gaps, especially if your appetite is still recovering.

4. Foods to Avoid: After surgery, it is wise to avoid heavy, greasy, or overly spicy foods, as these can exacerbate digestive issues and discomfort. If you notice that certain foods cause bloating or gas, it may be best to limit or avoid them.

Monitoring Recovery
Regarding the change in your discharge after eating the four-herb chicken dish, it is important to monitor any unusual symptoms. A change in discharge color can be normal post-surgery, especially if you are still healing. However, if you notice:
- Increased bleeding: If the discharge becomes bright red and is heavier than expected, it is essential to contact your healthcare provider.

- Foul odor or unusual symptoms: Any signs of infection, such as fever or severe pain, should also prompt a visit to your doctor.

Conclusion
In summary, focus on a balanced diet rich in protein, vitamins, and minerals to support your recovery after uterine fibroid removal. Stay hydrated, consider gentle supplements if needed, and avoid foods that may aggravate your digestive issues. Always consult with your healthcare provider regarding any significant changes in your symptoms or if you have concerns about your recovery. Your health and comfort are paramount during this healing process.
